Homecoming Convocation
We are excited to have Bob Goff, author of New York Times Best-Selling books Love Does and Everybody Always, as our Homecoming Convocation speaker. Bob calls himself a "recovering lawyer" because after practicing law for 25 years, then becoming the Honorary Consul to Uganda, he gave up his law firm to pursue writing and speaking full time. The U.S. Department of State recognizes Goff as a diplomat due to his work with Love Does, formerly known as Restore International, a non-profit organization he founded that has been fighting for human rights and providing education to children in conflict zones for over 15 years.

The Dick and Judy Gross Servant-Leader Award and the Eric Liddell Sportsmanship Award will be presented to students at this Convocation.

Scot Talk - Convento: a Homecoming Chapter Meeting
Join Matt Doll, Director of Gordon IN Orvieto for a Scot Talk as part of the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Orvieto program.

The centerpoint of education can be like an enclosed garden—a space that improves vision, invites dialogue and leads one out into the world with wisdom and true compassion for others. In order to do this, one has to be willing to leave behind what is familiar and be ready to surrender control.

Having taught for 15 years abroad, first in Bethlehem and Jerusalem and now in Italy, Matthew Doll will be sharing how the Orvieto program has become a place where teaching the arts and humanities, in a foreign setting, uniquely centralizes the aim of the curriculum by inviting students and faculty to form a living learning community of deep trust, genuine presence and service.

Art Gallery Reception for Exempla: Gordon in Orvieto 20th Anniversary Exhibit
Historically, exempla have been most commonly understood in literary terms, thought of as short, illustrative anecdotes. However, they are equally present in the visual motifs and traditions of Italian churches and public institutions. Think of the Sistine Chapel, the Scrovegni Chapel, and the Chapel of the Corporal in the Duomo, all covered with visual narratives that serve as examples to be read, cross-referenced, and used for instruction and encouragement. They might even speak today, if we are prepared to look.

Just as the Gordon in Orvieto program emphasizes and celebrates the spirit of context and encounter in art, this anniversary exhibition seeks to showcase the rich connections among twenty years worth of students and teachers, all of whom once shared a common place of making and study. The show will be filled with exempla that have the possibility to speak in a new, re-situated context.

"Freud's Last Session"
Jeff Miller directs the off-Broadway hit, Freud’s Last Session, for Homecoming audiences September 26 through 29. The play is an imagined conversation between the legendary psychoanalyst of the title and his guest, a rising young Oxford don named C. S. Lewis, on the day England enters World War II and just weeks before Freud takes his own life. Freud and Lewis clash about love, sex, the existence of God and the meaning of life in this deeply touching play filled with humor and wit, exploring the mind, heart and soul of two brilliant men who come at the greatest questions of all time from very different perspectives.
